Recent events....

November 2011We attended the annual Remembrance Parade at Hadley.15 cadets had a great time on a fieldcraft weekend at Nesscliffe training area.
83 (St Georges) is one of the youngest ATC Squadrons in the ATC, founded on St Georges Day 2008. We meet on a Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45pm - 9:15pm at the TA Centre opposite the VW Dealership in Trench.Cadets may join the Squadron from their 13th birthday and stay with us until thier 18th birthday. Cadets that have passed the Senior NCO course and meet some additional criteria may stay on until they reach 20.The cost is £5 per month and there are a variety of ways to pay this. it covers uniform, insurance and most of the activities provided. Please look at the Activities Section to see what we get up to.The Squadron has a great working relationship with the local schools and our neighbouring Squadrons which allows us to provide an excellent range of activities throughout the year.We never close! Unlike our friends in some youth organisations, we operate throughout the school holidays, only stopping for a couple of weeks at Christmas

Activities

Flying and Gliding Flying and Gliding:Cadets get the opportunity to fly in a variety of both civil and military aircraft and can, in fact, go on to fly solo in gliders and light aircraft. Every cadet gets to experience taking control of an aircraft from their very first flight.Most flying takes place at the local RAF station - RAF Cosford for us - but can cadets will typically fly at the annual Easter and summer camps.

Adventure TrainingYou have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of adventure training, be that for the Duke of Edinburgh Award or just for that sense of achievement.All of our instructors are fully qualified in their respective fields and the list of whats available is endless:Hiking & MountaineeringSkiingParachutingHang Gliding & ParaglidingCanoeingSailingRock ClimbingWild CampingWhite Water Raftingand so on

Shooting

ShootingCadets get the opportunity to be instructed on the safe handling and firing of 2 types of weapon. The No8 .22 target rifle and the L98 A2 7.62mm Cadet Rifle - shown here.Shooting is a core activity of the ATC and is carried out under the strictest safety regulations and environment.

Academic Training Academic TrainingIts not School, (ok well some lessons may feel like it) but our instructors are all trained and try to make it a little different to being at school. Some lessons even take place on top of mountains or while youre lying in a muddy ditch. Of course a few take place at 5,000 ft!

Camps

CampsThere are 3 main types of camp that cadets can attend:1: Annual camp, usually at an active RAF Station (including Cyprus and Germany)2: Specialist Camps, Cross country skiing, Technical courses, Adventure Training etc3: Weekend camps: Duke of Edingburgh's, Field craft etc.These are usually with other Squadrons from the ATC or can be with cadets from the other cadets forces.There is sometimes a small fee for camps but typically its less than £100 for a week, including all the food and accomodation.

Field Craft Field CraftPlayed Call of Duty and the like on the XBOX? Want to see how its really done? Well then Field Craft will give you the skills and techniques necessary. You never know, it might even help with your score on the XBOX (Apparently it can...)83 SQN do quite a lot of this particular activity. At least 6 times a year we deploy to Nesscliff or Swynnerton and spend the weekend in a ditch eating out of foil bags!It can get a bit chilly - lowest recorded temp is... well we can't really say but it's great fun.

Drill and Ceremonial

Drill and CeremonialDrill is an important part of our training. It teaches discipline and self respect. It may not look much of a laugh but once you've done your first big parade you'll see why we enjoy it so much.We also participate in a number of ceremonial engagements throughout the year, notably Remembrance Day Parade and Battle of Britain Parade.There's also the Drill competitions at Wing, Region and Corps Level.

Civ Comm Page

Civilian Committee

As well as the obvious military element, there is also an allied civilian structure that effectively acts as the backbone of the organisation. Civilian Committees determine the running of the ATC from squadron level through to representation on the Air Defence Council. Each squadron has one, comprised of parents and friends, its role being to assist the squadron's Commanding Officer, raise funds and ensure the squadron maintains direction.

As you can imagine, fundraising is a very important aspect as it supports many of our activities. Most camps and other adventurous pursuits are financed through this fundraising and it's these efforts which help keep the cost of air cadet membership incredibly low.

Many parents and friends get a great deal of enjoyment and fun out of assisting 'their' squadrons as members of the Civilian Committee. Committees meet to their own timetable, usually once-a-month, under the direction of a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Most squadron Civilian Committees will be very pleased to accept offers of extra help - even if you can't commit to regular or long term assistance.

Information for parents

Capable staff, safe cadetsEvery parent's primary concern is for the safety and well-being of their son or daughter. Rest assured we take this equally seriously. Many of our activities (often outdoor) rely on our cadets being in a safe, secure and enjoyable environment in which they can sometimes be challenged physically. Our long history is a testament to our expertise and care in this area so that we can provide the thrills of adventurous training under the guidance of experienced, trustworthy staff. The staff at your local squadron are always available to speak to and will put your mind at rest regarding any concerns you may have.Our volunteers are the inspirational connection between the Organisation and our cadets. We train and prepare our staff (many of whom have been air cadets themselves or have a Service background) to deal with the needs of young people and encourage their skills in all endeavours they undertake. Volunteer staff at all levels are strictly checked through the Criminal Records Bureau , and receive internal security checks, before they can take sole charge or responsible leadership of cadets.Volunteers are also fully trained and qualified in any activities that they are involved in, not least those taking part in adventurous pursuits who are also qualified first-aiders (essential first aid is also taught to cadets).Rest assured - this is the way all squadrons operate - only with skilled, capable and responsible volunteers would we be able to maintain the high standards that our cadets experience and which helps push them to be higher achievers in everything they do with us - safely and confidently.For more information on your child's safety you can read the Air Cadet Organisations Child Protection Guide.
Why air cadets? It's a fair question, but ask anyone who has taken part as a cadet, adult volunteer or parent and you'll know how special the organisation is. It offers young people from all walks of life a chance to get active, learn new skills and make new friends in an inspirational and safe environment.It doesn't interfere with their school responsibilities and cadets take an invaluable set of experiences and strong personal ethics with them when they leave that they can put to good use at university or in the career of their choosing. It's true that some cadets do take up a career within the Services, but there is no liability for them to join up after leaving the organisation. Their personal development as confident and spirited young people is our main aim.Under the guidance of our fully qualified volunteer staff we'll offer your son or daughter many activities to take part in and every opportunity to build their strengths and improve their confidence. We hope that they stay with us for several years and thoroughly enjoy their membership - our volunteer staff are always on hand to assist parents with any questions or concerns.Your responsibilitiesWe ask parents for as little as possible. We provide most of the kit and encourage cadets to be self-sufficient and keep their uniform in good order themselves. Don't be upset if they ask you not to iron their shirt as there is a certain way of doing it and they are encouraged to handle it themselves! However, you are responsible for their uniform, which is valued at around £200 and is issued on loan - it should only be used for air cadet activities and must be returned at the end of their time with us.Footwear is not included, so shoes or boots will need to be provided. Beyond this, your responsibility is mainly for getting your son or daughter to the squadron promptly for meetings and supporting them as they progress. However, any further involvement is always gratefully received.FundingAll organisations need funding. We are luckier than most as the RAF provide the money for uniforms, premises, flying and several other activities. Each cadet provides a small subscription of approximately £5 a month, which goes towards funding the many activities that they undertake. National and international camps and expeditions may lead to extra costs - but we will always keep these to a minimum. We want the organisation to be available to everyone and staff are happy to discuss cost-related issues with parents at any time.The squadron must provide the rest of the required funding, primarily through the fundraising efforts of the Civilian Committee that each has. We're always looking for parents who are keen to get involved with their squadron's Committee or would like to become a volunteer!

Join as an adult volunteer

Over 20? Seeking a new challenge? Would you like to develop skills, leadership qualities and gain qualifications too?At Air Cadets, we constantly assess our past achievements, implement changes to meet the challenges of today and make plans for the future. And a huge part of that planning is you. As the backbone of our organisation we're always on the look out for high-calibre individuals to become volunteers, helping to run the activities that play such an important role in the lives of our young members.All kinds of people make up our volunteer staff, coming from a range of backgrounds and interests. Obviously if you have direct experience of working with young people, or any relevant skills such as flying or gliding, you would be particularly welcome. These aren't essential though, as we will train and support you at every stage.That said, you'll have some personal qualities that are essential, such as patience, maturity and responsibility along with an understanding of young people and their needs. You needn't be an athlete, but a good level of physical fitness also helps to ensure you can keep up with the cadets!Are you Officer or SNCO material?We rely on our volunteers to help us operate as effectively as possible. Being well organised is an obvious must, ideally with good managerial and administrative skills, and an ability to listen to problems and deal with them tactfully and appropriately.Really show your skills in these areas and you could end up taking on more responsibility and moving up through the ranks as an officer or senior non-commissioned officer (SNCO). Of course, first you have to join as a Civilian Instructor and then have selection interviews at Wing HQs and Regional HQs but we guide you through that. If you have the potential then well spot it!

Joining

So you think you have what it takes?

On your 1st night you'll have a chat with the CO and then be introduced to the P Flight Commander.

P Flight is where you start your training. Usually completed in the first 6 weeks you will learn how to march and do drill. Map reading and field craft skills. Cover the history of the RAF and ATC and be introduced to the No 8 Rifle.

You're assessed throughout that initial period and if your instructors feel you have what it takes then you will be enrolled and tested for your 1st Class qualification.

You will then join one of the main Squadron Flights and many many more opportunities open up for you.
